Between the years 1940-1941: different groups operated in the ghetto, with their own religious leaders, many of whom tried to maintain a religious lifestyle. There were also Hasidic religious groups. There were also two rabbinic groups – the official and the unofficial; the former in principle supported Rumkowski and the latter denounced his actions. However, in January – October 1942, most religious leaders opposing Rumkowski were on the deportation lists, as the so-called unproductive element. From the end of 1942 until May 1944 was period of relative peace and freedom to practice religious life.
