Bałuty Ghetto 1940–1944

24. Order Service (Ghetto Police)

Established on May 1, 1940 (the day the ghetto was sealed off). Its commander was Leon Rozenblat, and the headquarters was located in a building at Lutomierska Street 1. The Order Service kept order in the ghetto, fighting the black market. Officers had bad reputation, especially for their cooperation in deportations from the ghetto to death camps. The ghetto was divided into five police areas. There was also a Special Branch of the ghetto police (Sondererabteilung), with its registered office at .Łagiewnicka 96 Street, which helped the Germans in the looting of Jewish property.

"The Jewish policemen hailed mostly from social dregs. They lived well. They had good food and the best apartments. Their attitude towards the poor laborers was terrible. If a worker said some word that they did not like, he would disappear immediately, and no one knew where he was. There were also secret agents among the workers, who reported everything to the police.”
