A significant role in supervising the ghetto and later in its liquidation was played by the Gestapo, stationing in a building belonging to the Schupo (German order police), at the intersection of the streets of Limanowskiego and Zgierska. As regards the looting of Jewish property, the Gestapo cooperated with the criminal police station in the ghetto, with its registered office at Kościelna Street 8/10 (currently a parish building). The place was known as the “red house” it in the ghetto, and was feared by the ghetto residents, as many of them were tortured there.
Also located in the ghetto was an outpost of the Schupo – order police. Schupo posts and sentry boxes, placed at intervals of 50-100 meters, guarded the boundaries of the ghetto. Schupo and Gestapo officers together conducted searches of persons resettled into the ghetto, especially eagerly taking their currency and valuables. They were famed for their exceptional brutality.
