In June 1940, Friedrich Uebelhoer, the chairman of the Kalisz region, launched the Bank of Issue in the ghetto, located at 71 Marysińska Street, with a branch at 56 Limanowskiego Street. The Bank was in charge of supervising the issuance of ghetto money (called “rumki”), which was the only legal currency in the ghetto. Exchange of money that was associated with it resulted in a significant impediment to illegal trade with the so-called Aryan part of the city.
