Bałuty Ghetto 1940–1944

43. After the liquidation of the ghetto

Łódź Ghetto was rather well “cleared” by the Germans. Even the tram tracks of two independent lines in the ghetto were dismantled and disposed of. It was not until 1945 that the Poles finally entered the ghetto. One of the photos from the collection of the Jewish Historical Institute features looters taking whatever they could from the ghetto. However, there was no auction of Jewish property, which did happen in other cities. Since Warsaw was destroyed, for the first three years Łódź took over some of its functions. Deserted by the Germans, the city filled with new residents fairly quickly. The former Jewish residential district also found new tenants.
