Bałuty Ghetto 1940–1944

08. Labor Workshops

The ghetto produced goods on the orders of the German authorities. Approximately 50 per cent of them came from the state authorities: military, police, and paramilitary organizations. Goods manufactured in the ghetto included uniforms, military coats, fur coats, padded jackets, hats, shoes, straw gaiters, rucksacks and backpacks. The other half of the production orders came from private and well-known department stores. They ordered mainly underwear, clothes, footwear, handbags, furniture, lamps, or lampshades.

“The ghetto is developing quickly. A great number of new workshops and factories are established, which, together with the existing ones, form what is in real-life jokingly called the Jewish Industrial District. Marysin, a completely separate district, in addition to schools, summer and day camps, preventorium, etc. houses a lot of factories and workshops, such as rag rugs factory, jam factory, candy factory, cobbler’s workshop, ornament workshop, and many others. All this >> state-owned<<, >> des Aeltesten der Juden <<.”
